David Shakari’s Journey to Health and Recovery: A Testimony of Strength and Transformation

In 2022, David Shakari, a well-known businessman from Port Vila, Vanuatu, faced a life-threatening illness that left him unable to walk after major surgery on his back and right underarm. Confined to a wheelchair and staying in a hotel because his home wasn’t accessible, David knew he had to take charge of his health.

Determined to regain control, David joined The 10,000 Toes Campaign’s “Live More Abundantly” (LMA) program—a transformative health initiative by the Portoroki Seventh-day Adventist Church and Essy Move Health and Fitness Group.

The journey to recovery wasn’t easy. David struggled with his weight and the aftermath of surgery, but he never gave up. With fierce determination, he committed to regular exercise, healthy eating, and cutting alcohol and kava from his life.

Today, David is fully recovered, stronger than ever, and passionate about sharing his story with others.

Doctors told me that I’m no longer sick, and I am happy to be normal again. I no longer drink kava or alcohol like I used to. I discipline myself to eat healthy and make healthier choices.

Living in town is always busy with family and my private business, but physical exercise has greater benefits, and I have seen the positive impact of regular exercise and healthy eating.— David Shakari

David’s local LMA group now offers free fitness sessions to help others in Port Vila tackle lifestyle diseases and reclaim their health. His story proves that you can overcome even the toughest challenges with the right support and mindset.
